Vol. 86 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Holding of Local Elections.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether it is intended to hold the local elections during the present year; and, if so, whether he will indicate now the approximate date on which they will be held.

The Government is desirous of holding these elections as soon as possible. Owing, however, to the existing severe curtailment of transport services, shortage of paper and of various materials used in connection with polling, considerable difficulty would be experienced in holding them. In all the circumstances, therefore, it may not be practicable to hold the elections during the present year, but the matter is being carefully examined.

By the Minister for Local Government and Public Health.

Would the Minister say when he hopes to make a definite statement in connection with the matter?

When I have come to a conclusion on the matter. I have explained the difficulties in the way.
