Vol. 86 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration Statistics.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state (a) the number of persons, distinguishing between men and women, who emigrated to (1) Great Britain, and (2) Northern Ireland, during each month subsequent to November, 1941; (b) the number of permits issued during each such month to (1) men, (2) women, for the purpose of enabling them to travel to Great Britain and/or Northern Ireland for the purpose of taking up employment.

A tabular statement giving the figures required by the Deputy is being circulated with the Official Report.

The explanations which I gave Deputy Pattison in reply to a similar question last December apply also to the present statement. Separate figures for Great Britain and Northern Ireland are available only in respect of the total number of travel permits issued, not in respect of travel permits issued to persons travelling for the particular purpose of taking up employment. Moreover, both sets of figures include permits issued for journeys involving merely temporary absences and therefore in neither case are the figures a guide as to the number of persons emigrating in the ordinary sense.

Following is the statement:—

(a) Total number of travel permit cards issued during each month since November, 1941, to (1) men and (2) women, for travel to (a) Great Britain and (b) Northern Ireland, irrespective of the purpose of the journey.
