Vol. 86 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Repair of Army Lorries.

asked the Minister for Defence if, in view of the amount of unemployment created in various garages on account of the present curtailment of petrol and tyre supplies, he will be prepared to allocate repair work in connection with Army lorries and ambulances amongst the small garages in the County and City of Dublin.

I regret that it would not be practicable to give effect to the Deputy's suggestion. It will be appreciated that it is essential to have adequate military personnel available to carry out all repairs to vehicles in the event of an outbreak of hostilities and part of the training of such personnel consists in the maintenance of the transport at present in use.

So far as Dublin City and County are concerned at present minor transport repairs are carried out by qualified military personnel of the units concerned. Major repairs are carried out at barracks equipped for this purpose. If, for any reason, major repairs cannot be carried out urgently at these places the work is then given out to public garages possessing suitable equipment.
