Vol. 86 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proposed Export of Goat Flesh.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that there is a considerable amount of goat and kid flesh available for which there is no market in the country; and, if so, if he is prepared to grant a licence for the export of this commodity.

Until last year there was no export trade worth mentioning in goat or kid flesh. The home market normally absorbed any supplies of this meat offered and there is no reason to think that it will not continue to do so.

It would be most undesirable to slaughter off the goats and kids in the country because of this temporary and abnormal demand for export, and I am not prepared, therefore, to grant licences for export except in the case of goat flesh which was in cold store before the Orders prohibiting export and storage came into operation.
