Vol. 86 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Institutions and Rationing.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state whether he has caused any examination to be made of the difficulties which will inevitably arise in the provisioning of public institutions and large institutions run by charitable organisations as regards rationed articles, by reason of the fact that separate ration books have been issued to all persons resident in such institutions; and whether he will consider the desirability of introducing an alternative system of rationing such institutions by bulk supplies, based on their population.

Consideration has been given to the problems likely to arise in the case of public and other institutions on the introduction of rationing by means of the ration book, and special arrangements will be made to meet their particular difficulties.

Might I ask if it is on the lines of institution ration books that it is proposed to do it?

No. The arrangement will have to depend on the class of commodity and the method of using the ration book in relation to it.

Is the Minister aware that the same thing applies to institutions in Great Britain and that they have issued what they call institution ration books to meet the needs of such institutions?

A similar arrangement can be made here in relation to some classes of commodities.

Take the case of a charitable institution where there may be 300 or 400 persons. Does the Minister intend to meet such cases by what he has in mind?

That will depend on the class of goods rationed. A different arrangement will be made in respect of each class of goods.
