Vol. 87 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Purchase of County Dublin Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether an agreement to purchase the estate of representatives of Forbes Woods and Others (Record No. S. 15659), County Dublin, was entered into ten years ago, and if he is aware that half the purchase money has been retained ever since, and if he will state when this balance will be paid to the owners.

The purchase money of this estate (£770) was advanced on the 15th October, 1937, and orders for the distribution of the funds were made by the Judicial Commissioner on the 22nd July, 1941, when the owners of the estate received their shares of the portion then available for distribution to them.

Excepting certain sums which were retained to provide for superior interests, pending proof of title by the owners of such superior interests, and the costs relating thereto, the only other amount retained was a sum of £75 as guarantee deposit under Section 54 of the Land Act, 1933. Pending the revesting of the holdings in the purchasing tenants, it is not possible to state when this guarantee deposit may be released.

Will the recipients get the interest on the money when it is paid?

I could not say that without notice.

Is it not rather unfair to hold people's purchase money for years?

That is the law at present.
