Vol. 88 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Government Medical Appointment.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the number of county medical officers of health and medical officers of county boroughs; and the number of these who are ineligible to become applicants for the position of chief medical adviser to the Department of Local Government, by reason of (a) age, and (b) other qualifications, in accordance with the terms of the advertisement recently issued for the position.

There are 27 county medical officers of health and four medical superintendent officers of health in the county boroughs. As I informed the Deputy on Tuesday last, the holding of the competition rests with the Civil Service Commissioners and it is only that body who can determine the eligibility or otherwise of candidates.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary say how many are rendered ineligible by reason of the age limit being fixed at the point at which it is now fixed?

The Minister is not disposed to adjudicate on the qualifications for the post.

Even as regards age limits?
