Vol. 88 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Treatment of Tuberculosis.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that remarkable progress has attended the efforts of the City of Detroit, U.S.A., towards the eradication of tuberculosis; and if he will inquire from the Town Clerk of Detroit for details of the scheme in operation there, and the results claimed, with a view to seeing how far it might be practicable to adopt similar schemes in Ireland.

I am aware that special measures were taken in the City of Detroit for combating tuberculosis, but I understand that they embody certain conditions in regard to X-ray examinations of industrial workers seeking employment which could not be made generally applicable in this country without extended statutory powers. The reply to the latter part of the question is in the negative.

Arising out of the Parliamentary Secretary's reply is he satisfied that the plans and policies in this country for the eradication of tuberculosis are satisfactory?

That is a separate question.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary not satisfied that the necessary Act should be passed?

Is the Parliamentary Secretary in a position to say whether discussions are already proceeding between the corporation and Department of Local Government with a view to revising and improving the tuberculosis public health services of this city?

That is so, but that is a different matter. The question on the Order Paper is whether we contemplate adopting the scheme which is in operation in the City of Detroit.

It is a fact, however, that improvements are on their way?

They are under discussion.
