Vol. 88 No. 13

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Charges for Married Quarters in Barracks.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether some of the members of the Defence Forces who are allotted married quarters have to pay 10/6 for the same type of accommodation for which others pay only 5/3; and, if so, if he will state the reasons.

Soldiers who were provided with married quarters prior to the 5th September, 1929, have a sum of 9d. a day deducted from their marriage allowance, and soldiers who were provided with married quarters after that date have the sum of 1/6 a day deducted from their marriage allowance. It was found that the sum of 9d. a day did not cover the cost of the services provided, and it was, therefore, necessary to revise the rate. As it was not considered desirable to interfere with the position of soldiers in occupation of married quarters prior to the introduction of the new rate, it was decided to retain the old rate for so long as they continued in Army service.
