Vol. 88 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pigs and Bacon Commission.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state whether, with a view to securing practical experience and first-hand information with regard to costings in the raising and production of pigs, the Pigs and Bacon Commission have themselves engaged in pig production.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the weekly factory killings of pigs since the week ended 4th July, 1942, to the latest available date.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state in regard to the Pigs and Bacon Commission (a) the average weekly factory killings of pigs under their control for the first six months of 1940 after the commission first came into operation, and the corresponding figure for the last six months available; and (b) particulars of administrative costs of the Pigs and Bacon Commission detailing numbers of staff, grade, individual salaries, wages, allowances, etc., for both above-mentioned periods.

I propose answering questions 15, 16 and 17 together. The Pigs and Bacon Commission have not engaged in pig production. The information in regard to weekly factory killings of pigs since 4th July, 1942, is in the form of a tabular statement which will be circulated with the Official Report. The average weekly factory killings of pigs during the first six months of 1940, and the corresponding figures for the six months April to September, inclusive, 1942, are:—

January-June, 1940

17,930

April-September, 1942

5,299

The administrative costs of the Pigs and Bacon Commission are shown in the annual statement of accounts of the commission submitted to the Oireachtas. No change has taken place in the costs and salaries of the staff since the commission came into existence in 1940.

Following is the tabular statement:—

The weekly factory killings of pigs since the week ended July 4th, 1942, are as follows:—

In view of the decrease in the volume of work done by the commission, does the Minister think that the present cost of administration can be justified?

Administration may be more difficult when there are less pigs.
