Vol. 88 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fuel for Anthracite Stoves.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that a large number of schools and institutions are equipped with special anthracite stoves which are not of the slow combustion type; and if the Minister will indicate what fuel, other than coal, can be burned in such stoves with any degree of efficiency.

I have no doubt but that many schools and institutions are equipped with anthracite stoves which are not of the slow combustion type but unless the classes of stoves which the Deputy has in mind possess some particular features I am not aware of any in which turf could not be used in substitution for anthracite in present circumstances. If the Deputy so desires I will request the Emergency Scientific Research Council to carry out tests in the case of fuels other than anthracite in any particular type of stove he has in mind.

Does the Minister say that turf can be burned in a closed anthracite stove of the Esse type?

If it is moist.

I have tried it myself and it was a complete failure.

Will the Minister himself give a demonstration?

The makers say a smokeless fuel must be burned in these stoves. Is that incorrect?

I do not want to suggest that turf or any other substitute for fuel which can be used in anthracite stoves will give the same results or be as efficient in every respect as anthracite; but as the anthracite is not available, these other fuels must be used and can be used.

It would cost a fortune to burn turf in an anthracite stove.

Not necessarily.
