Vol. 89 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shortage of Shoeing Iron.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there is a shortage of shoeing iron at the moment, and if he will hold out any hope of increased supplies of shoeing iron being made available in the near future.

I am aware that there has been a shortage of standard shoeing iron for a considerable time past. I am informed, however, that farriers throughout the country are able to overcome to some extent the difficulties arising out of the shortage of standard bars by using scrap iron bars, remaking worn horseshoes and, in general, working other qualities of suitable scrap metal to meet their requirements under present conditions.

It is expected that it will be possible to produce in the near future a limited quantity of rolled iron and steel goods, such as bars, flats, squares, etc., in the Haulbowline steel rolling mills. Arrangements have been made to reserve a proportion of the output of the mills for the production of horseshoe iron.
