Vol. 89 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-line Fishing in Lough Derg.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether a decision has been reached on the application of the Limerick Board of Conservators to restore cross-line fishing in Lough Derg; and whether, in view of the imminence of the fishing season, the amount of unemployment among fishermen and the necessity for easing the food situation, the Minister will announce his decision in this matter with the least possible delay.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether his attention has been drawn to the expert evidence, in favour of the restoration of cross-line fishing in the interests of the improvement of fisheries as a whole, given at a public sworn inquiry at Dromineer, in September, 1942, to inquire into the necessity for revoking or altering the existing by-laws or making of by-laws relating to cross-line fishing in Lough Derg; and whether, in view of the unanimity of this evidence, he will consider the revocation of the by-laws relating to cross-line fishing.

As question Nos. 10 and 11 relate to the same matter, I propose taking them together.

Having considered fully the report presented to me by the officers who conducted the public inquiry at Dromineer on 2nd September 1942, and all the relevant circumstances as disclosed by the evidence tendered at that inquiry, I am not satisfied that a case has been made for revoking or altering the existing by-laws or the making of new by-laws, affecting cross-line fishing in Lough Derg. I do not, therefore, propose to make any alteration in the law as it stands.
