Vol. 89 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mullingar Mental Hospital Attendants.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is aware that considerable dissatisfaction exists among the mental hospital attendants at Mullingar with the rate of emergency bonus fixed, and the holiday arrangements at present obtaining; and that the county manager has refused several requests to receive a deputation from the Mental Hospitals Branch of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union to discuss these matters; and if, in view of the importance of their work and special circumstances governing their employment, the Minister will consider setting up a committee to inquire into the whole question of wage payments, diet charges and the annual holiday system of mental hospital attendants.

On the 25th ultimo there was received in my Department a copy of a resolution adopted by the Mullingar Mental Hospital Branch of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union concerning wages and holiday arrangements. As regards the latter part of the question, the setting up of a special commission of inquiry would not be warranted.
