Vol. 89 No. 12

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supply of Ticken and Hemp.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that harness makers in County Dublin are unable to obtain supplies of ticken and hemp to meet the present demands being made on them, that permits issued cannot be met by the traders in Dublin City, and that ticken is being used for other purposes outside the harness-making trade; and if he will take steps to conserve all supplies of ticken for the harness-making trade.

I am not aware that harness makers in County Dublin are unable to obtain supplies of ticken, or that coupon equivalent licences granted to such persons for the purchase of ticken cannot be met by traders in Dublin City. Supplies of ticken are being made available to traders for distribution but, as these supplies are restricted, because of the shortage of yarn, harness makers may not be able to get all they would wish. A scheme to conserve supplies of harness ticken for harness makers has been prepared in agreement with the distributors and will be put into operation at an early date. I am aware that hemp is not obtainable, but limited supplies of a satisfactory substitute are available.
