Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allocation of Government Advertisements.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether there are any reasons of State policy for withholding from the Kilkenny People advertising matter issued by Government Departments to the more important weekly newspapers in the provinces; and, if so, what those reasons are; whether, if there are no such reasons, he will take steps to ensure that the Kilkenny People will be treated in the matter of State advertising on the same basis as all other important provincial newspapers.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the negative. As regards the second part, I see no reason for altering the standing practice under which the selection of newspapers for advertising is left to the discretion of the Departments concerned, who are in the best position to decide as to the journals which are most likely to meet their requirements.

If it is Ministerial policy, as announced by the Minister for Supplies, to give such advertisements to the papers with the largest circulation, what is the reason for refusing advertisements to this paper which, undoubtedly, has the largest circulation in a wide area of two counties?

I do not know that that is according to fact.

Will the Minister ask for particulars as to the certified circulation of this paper?

I do not issue any advertisements.

But you pay for them.

The people pay for them.
