Vol. 89 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport for Turf Workers.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will make representations to the manager for the Counties of Leix and Offaly concerning the necessity for providing transport for groups of turf workers who are obliged to travel long distances to and from their daily work, and who are now unable to obtain cycle tyres for this purpose.

No objection has been raised to the provision of transport for turf workers where the necessity for this course arises, and county managers generally are alive to the need for making such arrangements as may be required.

Is the Minister aware that in the County Laoighis the labour exchange managers, in some cases, have ordered turf workers to travel as much as seven miles from their homes to work, that the workers concerned are not able to obtain cycle tyres, and that there is no other method of transport available?

Surely, the Deputy must know that the question of the provision of cycle tyres is not within my province?

Well, then, will the Minister endeavour to encourage the county managers concerned to provide reasonable transport facilities in such cases?

The county managers are responsible themselves in such matters, and I cannot interfere with them.

That answer is quite the opposite to the answer that the Minister gave to the last question.
