Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Assistance Expenditure.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the total sum expended from all sources in the last financial year in respect of (a) unemployment insurance benefit, (b) unemployment assistance benefit, (c) food vouchers issued by his Department; and whether he will state the amount of such expenditure provided by (1) the Exchequer, (2) rates, and (3) contributions payable by employers and workers.

The total sums expended by or on behalf of my Department from all sources in the financial year, 1942-43, in respect of unemployment benefit, unemployment assistance, and food allowances were: £806,481; £1,052,084; and £428,339, respectively.

As regards unemployment benefit, the amount of the Exchequer contribution paid through the Unemployment Insurance and Unemployment Assistance Vote in that year towards unemployment benefit was £265,272, and the amount of the contribution paid out of the Unemployment Fund and credited to the Vote referred to in respect of the cost of administration in the same year was £179,056. The contributions of employees and employers paid into the Unemployment Fund in that period was £930,554. No contributions are made to the Unemployment Fund by local authorities.

So far as unemployment assistance is concerned, the sum of £493,178 was provided by the Exchequer through the Unemployment Insurance and Unemployment Assistance Vote, and £258,906 by local authorities. In addition, there was a contribution of £300,000 from the Unemployment Fund. There are no contributions payable by employers or workpeople in respect of unemployment assistance.

As regards food vouchers (food allowances), the total amount of the expenditure was provided by the Exchequer.

The figures given are subject to adjustment and audit.
