Vol. 89 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Limerick County Prison.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware that prisoners from areas outside the Borough of Limerick, who become insane while serving their sentences in Limerick county prison, are transferred to Limerick District Mental Hospital, and after the completion of the term of imprisonment, cease to be a charge on his Department, and become chargeable to the rates of Limerick County Borough; and if he will take steps to have all such prisoners committed and sent to the district mental hospitals in the areas to which these prisoners belong.

Mr. Boland

Under the existing law a person who becomes insane while serving a sentence of imprisonment can be sent only to the mental hospital for the place in which the prison is situate or to the central criminal lunatic asylum.

The question of amending the law on the matter will be considered, however, in connection with a Bill to amend the Lunacy Acts, which is being prepared by the Department of Local Government and Public Health.
