Vol. 90 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pay of Marines and Coast Watchers.

asked the Minister for Defence (1) how soon he intends to pay the marriage allowance to the wives and children of the personnel of the marine and coast watching services, and from what date the said allowance will be payable, and if it will be made retrospective at least for the past two years; (2) how soon he intends to pay the 7d. a day increased ration allowance to the unmarried members, and from what date the said increase will be payable.

Approximately 50 claims for marriage allowance from members of the Coast Watching Service have been paid. The claims, which are still outstanding, will be dealt with immediately on their receipt.

The allowance is paid in each case as from 5th March, 1943, or such later date as the soldier may qualify in regard to service and age as laid down in regulations.

I regret that I am unable to agree to the payment of marriage allowance retrospectively as requested by the Deputy.

As no claims have been received in the Department to date for payment of the increased allowance authorised for unmarried members of the Coast Watching Service, no payments have yet been made. The claims will be dealt with expeditiously when they are submitted. The increased allowance will be paid in each case with effect from 5th March, 1943.
