Vol. 90 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Pensions.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the hardships which are suffered by State pensioners, who are in receipt of small pensions, by reason of the rapid increase in the cost of living which has not been counterbalanced by any increase in the low pensions paid to such persons; and whether, having regard to the increase in wages granted to workers under Emergency Powers Orders, he will take steps to authorise an increase in pensions to such persons as are in receipt of pensions from public funds.

I would refer the Deputy to my reply to a similar question addressed to me on the 12th instant by Deputy Alfred Byrne.

In view of the fact that it is acknowledged generally that the cost of living has increased by approximately 60 per cent. during the past two and a half years and that that acknowledgment has had to take the form of a grant of emergency bonuses to workers in employment, will the Minister consider the question of making an emergency bonus Order of a character calculated to give these people an increase in their small pensions in order to help them in some way to meet the rapid increase in the cost of living?
