Vol. 91 No. 10

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Growing of Rye.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is prepared to take effective measures to promote the growing of rye as a bread cereal.

There appears to be considerable misapprehension as to the value of rye as a bread cereal in this country, Generally speaking, land which will give a good yield of rye will give at least as good a yield of wheat, but there are some poor lands, mainly in western counties, which produce fair crops of rye but would not produce crops of other cereals. It has been the practice to grow rye on such lands and the total amount of rye seed available is just about sufficient to allow this practice to be continued. To meet the case of occupiers of such lands, I propose to ask the Government to include in the Tillage Order for 1844 a provision that, in those counties where the wheat quota is 1/25th of the arable land, the sowing of rye instead of wheat will be accepted as compliance with the Order.
