Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Intermediate Certificate Examinations.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the number of boys who presented themselves for the intermediate certificate examination in 1943; (b) the percentage of such boys taking Greek as an honours subject; (c) the percentage of the latter who secured 87 per cent. or over of the possible marks in Greek; further, whether he will state (a) the percentage of boys presented for the examination in question who took (1) English, (2) Science, and (3) History and Geography as honours subjects and the percentages of such boys who secured 87 per cent. or over of the possible marks in (1) English, (2) Science, (3) History and Geography, and whether he will state further how many of the 72 scholarships allotted to boys were won by candidates who (a) took Greek as a subject in the examination, and (b) who did not take Greek.

The reply to this question is contained in a table which will be published in the Official Report.

The following is the table in question:—

(a) Total number of boys examined, 4,057; (b) column (2) of the following table gives the percentages (of the total number) who were examined in the subjects mentioned in column (1), and column (3) the percentages (of those examined in each subject) who obtained 87 per cent. or over of the possible marks:—

(c) There are no separate Pass or Honours papers for the intermediate certificate examination; (d) of the 72 boys who qualified for the award of scholarships, 38 took Greek as one of their subjects, and 34 did not take Greek.
