Vol. 92 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Condition of County Mayo School.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that the Medical Officer of Health for County Mayo reported to the Mayo Board of Health on December 18th, 1943, that Corclough National School in the Erris district of County Mayo is overcrowded, that the lavatories are very bad, that half of the slates are off the roof and that there is no system of drainage; and if he will state what steps he will take to have some system of sanitation installed.

The answer to the first part of the question is "yes". For the Deputy's information I may say that, under the regulations for national schools, the responsibility for making arrangements to ensure that the school building is kept in proper repair devolves upon the manager; my Department, however, is empowered to make a grant-normally two-thirds of the cost —for an approved scheme for the improvement of a school building (vested in trustees, as the Corclough building is, for national school purposes) in accordance with plans and specifications prepared by the Commissioners of Public Works. I have received a report from the Commissioners of Public Works on the Corclough building and premises, and am looking into the case.
