Vol. 92 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Naturalisation of Aliens.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state the number of aliens who became naturalised Irish citizens (a) during the years 1922 to 1932, inclusive; (b) during the years 1933 to 1943, inclusive; and (c) during the period September, 1939, to December, 1943.

Mr. Boland

Prior to the passing of the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act, on the 10th of April, 1935, there was no provision in the law to enable aliens to become naturalised.

From the passing of the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act to the end of the year 1943 certificates of naturalisation were issued to 293 persons. Seventy of these certificates were issued since the 1st of September, 1939. Seventy-four of the persons naturalised were wives of Irish citizens, and 49 were minors to whom certificates of naturalisation were issued under Section 7 of the Act on account of Irish descent or associations.
