Vol. 92 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pollution of Dublin River.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware of complaints arising among local residents as to the probable effect upon public health of the polluted condition of the River Camac, Dublin; and, if so, whether he will have steps taken to abate the nuisance.

I am aware that there is dissatisfaction among some residents in the area. The abatement of the nuisance is a matter for the sanitary authorities concerned and has been receiving attention from the Dublin County Council and the Dublin Corporation. There are two or three manufacturing firms which are mainly responsible for the discharge of noxious effluent into the river. One of them has carried out a good deal of cleaning in the river and has installed a Sveen Petersen plant. This plant, which is intended to deal with the effluent, has only been working for a week and, while it is understood that the effluent is greatly improved, it is not possible yet to give the final result of the treatment. A second plant is at present being provided and will be ready in about ten days, so that the entire effluent of the firm can then be dealt with. Another firm is taking steps to adopt a similar course. I have been informed that a conference between officers of the corporation and the county council with the manufacturing firms is being convened next week.
