Vol. 92 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Proposed New Publication.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether permission has been refused to Ailtirí na hAiséirghe for the publication of a new fortnightly four-page paper wholly in the national language, and, if so, if he will state on what grounds; if he is aware that such a publication would represent only an infinitesimal addition to the amount of newsprint which is at present consumed, and by publications which are in the English language, and whether the matter will again be favourably reviewed having regard to the official policy of reviving the use of the national language.

An application by Ailtirí na hAiséirghe for permission to publish a new fortnightly paper has been refused. The decision to do so was in accordance with the general policy of restricting the publication of periodicals which were not in existence when the Order relating to periodicals was made.

Whilst I am aware that the quantity of paper required for the publication is small, I regret I cannot see my way to alter the decision which I have already communicated to the promoters. Many similar applications by other persons desiring to publish new periodicals have also been refused.

Is the Minister not prepared to reconsider the matter?
