Vol. 92 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Flooding of Mayo Road.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that the road leading to the village of Muckersaun, near the Neale, County Mayo, is flooded for a period, sometimes for three months together. despite the fact that minor repairs were carried out on it some time ago, and if he will take immediate action to have this remedied in view of the fact that it is the only road accommodating 14 households.

The responsibility for this work rests with the local authority. My Department does not keep records of the various stages of ordinary road maintenance works except in cases where State grants are involved. In this case it has been ascertained that the county council made provision to the extent of £320 in the present year for the improvement of the road, that the work began about the end of August, 1943, but had to be temporarily suspended as the surveyor was unable to obtain the necessary supply of stone from the local farmers. Work, however, is again in progress.

Will the Minister give an assurance that the work will be continued, so as to relieve the flooding in question?

I am sorry that I cannot give any assurance in regard to that matter. As I have said, the work was stopped because a supply of materials was not readily forthcoming. A supply is now being maintained and I understand that work is being resumed. If, however, any further difficulty is experienced with regard to materials, I cannot give the Deputy an assurance that a supply will be forthcoming.
