Vol. 94 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Agricultural Machinery.

asked the Minister for Agriculture what arrangements he proposes to make in the issue of reapers and binders to ensure that the machinery so issued will be available for hire when not used on the owner's own land, so that the best use of such machinery may be made in the interests of increased national production.

As the Deputy is aware, a special committee has been set up in each county to advise as to the allocation of the limited number of reapers and binders which it is hoped to import for the coming harvest.

In order that the greatest possible benefit may be derived from these machines, committees have been informed that, so far as is possible, they should recommend persons or firms who would be prepared to work mainly for hire in their respective districts.

I am empowered by the Emergency Powers (No. 117) Order, 1941, to issue a direction for sale requiring an owner to sell a machine to another specified person if I am of opinion that satisfactory use is not being made of such machine.

Will the Minister say if the distribution will soon be made?

A distribution of those that have arrived will be made soon. Only one-third of what we expected has yet arrived.
