Vol. 94 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Barley Prices.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, now that the percentage of land under wheat is assured, he will consider increasing the fixed price of this year's crop of malting barley to at least 45/- a barrel of 16 stones.

I do not propose to alter the price of 35/- per barrel already announced for barley of this year's crop.

Does the Minister think that 35/- is an economic price for barley?

Of course.

The Minister would not say that before the election.

Did I not announce it before the election?

Malting gives a lot of employment in the county which the Minister and I represent. I think it would be only fair to the people who have sown the quota of wheat to give them 45/- a barrel for this year's crop of malting barley.

Well, if the Deputy thinks he can get 50/-, why not go ahead?
