Vol. 94 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rossmore Coal Mines.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that, because of the accumulation of huge dumps of coal at the pit head of Messrs. Flemings Coal Mines, Limited, Rossmore, some bank men and jobbers are now working short time; and if, in view of the acute shortage of coal supplies and the necessity of ensuring that coal mines are working to their full capacity, he will arrange to have the necessary clearance made at this pit head.

I am aware that some stocks of coal have accumulated at the Rossmore Colliery, a fact which it is difficult to understand, having regard to the extent to which coal purchasing permits have been issued in September. Whilst my Department is giving, and will continue to give, every possible assistance to the company, it is primarily a matter for that company to provide a selling organisation for the disposal of its output.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he not aware that similar conditions prevail at Wolfhill, and that a huge amount of coal is accumulating there also?

I am aware that a certain amount of coal has accumulated, and, as I have pointed out, that is a fact which it is difficult to understand, in view of the extent to which coal purchasing permits are issued, but it is not the function of my Department to sell the coal for the company, although my Department will continue to give every possible help.

Is it not a fact that they are not in a position to sell the coal because the Minister's Department has not issued permits?

Having regard to the number of permits that were issued, I am surprised that they have not been able to sell their coal.

Having regard to the fact that there are 2,000 tons of coal there, will the Minister not undertake to make some arrangements to have clearance made?

I do not think there are 2,000 tons of coal there.
