Vol. 94 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post-War Plans.

asked the Taoiseach if the sub-committee set up by the Cabinet to consider post-war plans has given special consideration to the problems which will arise on the return of thousands of Irish men and women now engaged in war work in Great Britain; and if adequate plans are being made to provide returning emigrants with work and homes.

As I stated in reply to a Parliamentary question addressed to me by Deputy Martin O'Sullivan on the 19th instant, the Cabinet Committee which was set up to direct the post-war planning activities of all Departments has approved in principle a large number of schemes. One of the main objects in view in the preparation of all these schemes is the provision of employment and housing which will be available for all our citizens whether they have remained at home during the emergency or return home after it.

It is not proposed to make separate provision for those who have emigrated during the emergency and who may return later—as such—but as I stated on the 19th instant, special attention is being given to the planning of works with a high employment content for the larger urban areas and for those rural areas which experience has shown to be most likely to need works of this kind, and it is from these areas that a high proportion of those who have emigrated in recent years have gone.
