Vol. 94 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Distress in Italy.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether, in view of the recent urgent appeal by His Holiness the Pope to those comparatively untouched by the war for help for the relief of famine and distress in Italy, the Government will make a special grant for this purpose.

The Government have this matter under active consideration and are in touch with the Vatican authorities and with the Irish Red Cross in regard to it. The Red Cross are about to send an initial consignment of foodstuffs for distribution. Although the difficulties created by the war restrictions are very great, it is hoped to arrange for further consignments at an early date. The Deputy may feel assured that the Government are prepared to help in every way possible.
