Vol. 94 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Exported Cattle.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state, following the increased scale of prices announced last June for home-produced beef by the British Ministry of Food, what representations were made by his Department to secure a more equitable adjustment in the scale of prices fixed for Irish cattle by the British Ministry, and if he will state what success, if any, has attended such efforts.

Appropriate representations were made to the British Ministry of Food for increases in the prices for our fat cattle for the 12 months from the 3rd July last equivalent to the increases fixed for British homebred fat stock. I regret to say that these representations were not successful.

Will the Minister say whether the policy of his Department, so far as the price for beef in the export market is concerned, is influenced by domestic considerations such as the cost of living here?

No. So far as the price of fat cattle is concerned, we would like to get a higher price, if possible.
