Vol. 95 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Electricity Supplies—English Paper's Statement.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the attention of the Publicity Bureau has been drawn to a statement by the Irish correspondent in a recent issue of an English Sunday paper to the effect that, owing to the failure of the Government of Eire to secure a small quantity of nickel steel from the British Government, the Electricity Supply Board was unable to carry out essential repairs to the turbines at Ardnacrusha, and, as a consequence, a serious breakdown in the supply of electricity in Eire was threatened; and, further, that as a result of the intervention of the said correspondent it was expected that the necessary quantity of nickel steel was likely to be made available by the British Government; and whether, if this statement is not true, an official denial will be issued through the Bureau.

The statements in the article referred to in the question were the subject of a denial issued to Irish newspapers by the Electricity Supply Board on the 9th October.
