Vol. 95 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Loss of “Cymric”—Compensation Claims.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of persons who lost their lives on the M.V. "Cymric"; the number of cases in which claims have been made for compensation, and the number in which payment of compensation has been refused; and if he will state on what grounds compensation has been paid in some cases and refused in others.

Eleven persons were serving on the missing M.V. "Cymric" on her last voyage. Claims for compensation have been received from dependents of eight persons and one of the claims has been rejected. Two other claims which are being investigated have not yet been decided. Payments are being made to the wives of the five married seamen, no investigation of financial circumstances being necessary before compensation is paid to a wife. The rejected application was from a seaman's father whose circumstances did not qualify him for compensation. The undecided claims made by the mother of one seaman and the sister of another will be finally dealt with when all relevant information has been made available.
