Vol. 95 No. 11

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shooting of Wild Swans.

asked the Minister for Justice whether, in view of the commercial inducements to shoot wild swans, he will make a prohibition Order under the Wild Birds Protection Act to prevent indiscriminate slaughter of these picturesque wild birds.

Mr. Boland

The Wild Birds Protection Act, 1930, does not give authority for the making of a general Order on the lines suggested by the Deputy. The Act empowers the Minister for Justice to make protection Orders only in respect of particular counties or parts of counties on the application of the councils of those counties.

The killing or taking of swans is prohibited in County Dublin by an Order which was made in 1935, but I have not received an application from any other county for a protection Order for swans.
