Vol. 95 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Quality of Farmers' Flour.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will alter the Emergency Powers Orders so as to allow country millers to extract the bran and pollard from farmers' wheat when grinding it for use by the growers, so that wheat growers can have the same quality bread as the rest of the community.

I have fully considered this matter, but in present circumstances the Deputy's proposal cannot be adopted.

Are not the men who are feeding the State entitled to as good a quality of bread as other people in the community? Surely, the farmers and their workers, who have been working long hours in order to produce this bread, are entitled to get as good a quality of bread as the rest of the people in the community? I think it is very unfair that they should not get the same quality.

Perhaps the Minister is not aware of the difference in the quality of the bread supplied in some of the local districts from that supplied in the Dublin area.

The position is that none of these local mills are equipped to produce flour of a prescribed extraction.
