Vol. 95 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Storage Tank in Tralee Bay.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he has considered the possibility of providing and charging rent for a pond or storage tank at Fenit Pier, Tralee Bay, in which lobsters and cray fish could be kept after being caught; whether he is aware that the lack of such storage facilities results in lower prices being paid to the fishermen because dispatch to cross-Channel buyers cannot be made at all seasons and that nearly 500 local fishermen engaged in lobster fishing would benefit if the facilities suggested could be given.

In November last, a request for the construction of a storage pond in Fenit area was received from a local lobster buyer, who was informed that there were no funds within my control available for such a project. Storage ponds for lobsters and cray fish have been erected elsewhere by private enterprise and it would seem more satisfactory for a buyer of good standing to set up a pond for himself.
