Vol. 95 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Junior Assistant Mistresses.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the poor circumstances of junior assistant mistresses by reason of their inadequate salaries; and, if so, if he will take steps to have their position reviewed with a view to the removal of the discontent which exists among them.

Representations have been made to me in regard to the remuneration of junior assistant mistresses. These teachers received an emergency bonus of 5/- a week as from 1/1/43. This bonus was increased to 8/- a week as from 1/1/44 and to 9/- a week as from 1/1/45.

Having regard to the Government's policy generally, namely, that basic wage and salary rates should not be reviewed during the emergency, an improvement in the basic remuneration paid to junior assistant mistresses cannot, in existing circumstances, be considered.
