Vol. 95 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Permit for Supply of Anthracite.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he has been approached in the matter of continuing the permit for anthracite for industrial heating purposes to Messrs. J.J. Duffy and Co., Carrickmacross (Bottlers); whether he is aware that to maintain the beer and ales stored by the firm in saleable condition an even temperature must be maintained in the stores and whether, in view of the fact that reasonable supplies of anthracite appear to be available, and the impossibility of keeping the present heating system working continuously throughout the night by using turf (as has been suggested by his Department) he will reconsider his decision and issue a permit to the firm in question.

I am aware of the conditions necessary for the maintenance of beer and ales in saleable condition but as has already been intimated to the firm in question and to those who made representations on their behalf only limited supplies of anthracite are available and these must be reserved for higher priority users who are unable to use alternative fuels. This firm, like all others similarly circumstanced, must, therefore, rely on turf to meet their requirements.
