Vol. 96 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Transport of Turf.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that great dissatisfaction exists among private producers of turf in South Kerry because of their inability to dispose of the turf to date, owing to lack of transport; and, if so, if he is now prepared to guarantee transport and a market for this turf; and, further, if he will undertake to guarantee a market and transport for turf produced by private enterprise this year.

At certain seasons of the year, especially when the movement of beet and grain demands priority, it is not possible to supply all the transport required for the haulage of turf from certain areas of which South Kerry is one. Over the year as a whole, however, transport is available for all the turf produced in these areas and adequate transport can be provided at the present time. Assurances have frequently been given that all turf of good quality produced for sale at reasonable prices will command a ready market.
