Vol. 96 No. 10

Ceisteanna.—Questions. Oral Answers. - Leix County Council Employees.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has received representations from Leix County Council recommending certain increases in wages to the employees of the council; and, if so, if he will state if he is prepared to sanction such increases.

I am aware that the county council passed resolutions in regard to wages of employees. The council have no functions in regard to remuneration of staff. The latter part of the question cannot, therefore, arise.

Might I point out to the Minister that it was the county manager who made the representations to the Minister's Department; and the county manager, I understand, has complete control of the remuneration of the staff?

I would advise the Deputy to read his own question. There is no mention of the county manager in it.

It was the county manager who made the representations to the Department.

Perhaps the Deputy has forgotten the terms of his question, but I will read them for him: "To ask the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has received representations from Leix County Council...." There is no mention of the county manager in the question.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he has received a resolution from Leix County Council unanimously passed by them proposing to introduce a 50-hour working week for all employees engaged in the council's hospitals and institutions; and, if so, if he will state if he is prepared to sanction the scheme as from the date proposed by the council.

The Leix County Council passed a resolution on the 3rd February requesting the county manager "to make arrangements to ensure that as from 1st April, 1945, all employees of the board of health section work not more than 50 hours per week". A copy of the resolution was transmitted to my Department by the manager on the 20th February. The manager at the same time intimated that he had informed the county council that even if it was decided to give effect to the terms of the resolution there is no living accommodation available for any extra staff which might thereby become necessary.

No action by my Department is called for pending the submission of any specific proposals which the manager may find it desirable and practicable to make.
