Vol. 96 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Cutch.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the fishermen of South Kerry cannot procure cutch for the barking of their nets; and if he will indicate whether supplies can be procured; and, if so, if he will take steps to ensure that a reasonable quantity is allocated for these fishermen.

I am aware that cutch is in short supply owing to the impossibility of importing it during the past three years. In 1943 the directors of the Sea Fisheries Association, whose stock of cutch had dwindled to a fraction of actual requirements, sought the aid of the Scientific Research Bureau, with the result that a reasonably good substitute preservative for fishing nets was found. I understand that the association can furnish particulars of this substitute to any fishermen seeking them.
