Vol. 96 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Mercantile Service.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the Government's proposals for the provision of a mercantile service for Éire; and if any plans are in preparation for the building of ships immediately following the cessation of hostilities in Europe.

As has already been mentioned, it is the intention of Irish Shipping Limited to acquire additional deep-sea ships of the most modern type to such extent as will be at least sufficient to provide for the minimum needs of this country. If the Deputy has in mind in the second part of his question the building of ships in this country, I can assure him that the matter has been long under consideration.
