Vol. 96 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Córas Iompair Éireann—Re-employment of Motor Drivers.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that early in 1939 the Great Southern Railway Company issued circulars to motor drivers in their employment encouraging as many of them as conveniently could do so to join the Volunteer Forces; and that a number of those who did so and, as a result, have served in the Army during the emergency, are not now being re-employed by Córas Iompair Éireann; and, if so, if he will state whether he has received representations and made any inquiries in this matter; and whether he proposes to take any steps to see that such men will be secured re-employment in the company.

The circular referred to by the Deputy applied to enlistment for the 2nd Line, Volunteer Force, which was not called out on permanent service during the emergency.

Representations regarding reinstatement in employment have been received from one driver, to whom the terms of the circular referred, and who subsequently joined the 1st Line of the Volunteer Force, and was called up for permanent service in September, 1939. This man was subsequently discharged from the forces as being medically unfit. The question of his re-employment in the service of Córas Iompair Éireann is at present the subject of correspondence with the company.
