Vol. 97 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tralee Housing Conditions.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that the landlord of 19 Mary Street, Tralee, had ejectment proceedings taken against three families residing there at Tralee District Court, because he was served with a dangerous building notice by the town surveyor; and that those families appeared before a meeting of Tralee Urban Council requesting alternative accommodation, but the council had none to offer them; and, if so, and in view of other pressing cases of the kind, if he will sanction the immediate building of houses on the site which has already been developed by the council.

The only information in my Department is that contained in a communication from the Tralee Urban District Council on the 19th ultimo in which it was intimated that a deputation of the residents of No. 19 Mary Street appeared before a meeting of the council on the 10th April in connection with the proposal to acquire the old infirmary buildings for their accommodation. At that meeting a communication was received by the urban district council from the Kerry County Council in which it was intimated that the possibility of utilising the buildings referred to for the accommodation of persons living in condemned houses had been investigated but that the buildings were in a dangerous condition and unfit for housing. As regards the latter part of the question the Tralee Urban District Council have carried out a good deal of site development of future housing schemes, and it has been intimated to the council that favourable consideration will be given to a proposal to proceed with the erection of houses thereon. The council have been asked to submit the necessary plans, etc., as soon as possible.
