Vol. 97 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Legal Tender Note Fund.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (1) the composition and value of the assets of the Legal Tender Note Fund on the 31st March, 1945, and (2) the total amount received by way of dividends and interest on the assets of the Fund during the year ended 31st March, 1945.

The particulars requested in the first part of the Deputy's question are given in the Balance Sheet of the Legal Tender Note Fund, published in Irish Oifigiúil of the 3rd ultimo. The information asked for in the second part of the question will appear in due course in the Statement of Accounts of the Central Bank for 1944-45, which will be presented to the Dáil in accordance with statute.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary say why, if the figure is now available, we cannot have it before the actual presentation of the report takes place?

As far as I am aware, in previous years the accounts were not published at this time of the year.

The Parliamentary Secretary will understand that I am not asking for the publication of the accounts but I am asking for a figure known to the Government and to the Central Bank, and will the Parliamentary Secretary say is there any reason why that figure would not be made available to us now?

I am not aware that the figure is actually known at this moment.

Surely the Parliamentary Secretary does not want to say that the Central Bank authorities do not know that figure?

They had better hire a book-keeper if they do not.
