Vol. 97 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Wool Clip.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that, as a result of the monopoly enjoyed by woolen manufacturers, a substantial portion of our clip had to be sold at prices unfavourable to the producer early in the season, and that since then prices have appreciated considerably; and, if so, whether in view of the fact that producers were completely at the mercy of home manufacturers, he will now consider taking the necessary measures to ensure that producers who sold early will be recouped for their losses.

I am not aware that producers were obliged to sell wool at unfavourable prices early in this season. The maximum prices for wools used by woollen manufacturers are fixed by Order at prices above world prices for wools of like quality. Beyond seeing that these prices are not exceeded I am not concerned with the fluctuations in market prices from time to time during the season, and the price is a matter for arrangement between the buyer and seller. The question of recoupment for losses by producers does not, therefore, arise.

Is the Minister aware that, as the price of wool fell at the end of last season, these people sold their wool this year as early as possible? I asked some time ago to have a price fixed. So far as I can see, the present Government are out to fleece the farmers and the wool producers. It is the same with oats, barley and everything else.
