Vol. 98 No. 3

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Judicial Appointments.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is prepared to set up a committee to advise him in regard to the recommendation of appointments to important positions of a judicial or semi-judicial nature.

Mr. Boland

The answer is in the negative.

Does the Minister not think it would be desirable to have an effort made to have the assistance of an impartial, non-Party committee which would advise him in the making of such appointments and so prevent a repetition of the unsavoury appointment made last week — that of a Party politician to the position of county registrar?

Mr. Boland

I know of no unsavoury appointment made last week and I may tell the Deputy that the Minister does not make appointments; the Government make them and they do not require any help from the Deputy; they are in the best position to know the particular qualities for any office.
